Overview

The DiskOnChip-Millennium, a member of M-Systems' DiskOnChip family of products, is a monolithic solid-state flash disk available in a standard 32-pin DIP or TSOP package. The DiskOnChip-Millennium products are optimized for use in Information Appliances, Set Top Boxes, Thin client or Network Computers, Thin Server, Embedded and portable PC-compatible computers that require minimal weight, space and power consumption, providing a very attractive alternative to conventional hard and floppy disk drives.

Using the TrueFFS® technology, the DiskOnChip-Millennium provides full flash file system, which delivers full hard disk emulation. It enables fast and easy adaptation into the major operating systems in the market, as well as to non-standard operating systems.

These qualities ensure faster time to market and deliver the most cost effective solution.

Designed into more then 400 standard embedded motherboards the DiskOnChip family provides high reliability low cost low power and high capacity Flash disk solutions.

The DiskOnChip-Millennium can be plugged into a standard DIP socket or soldered directly onto the mother-board, eliminating the need for mechanical disk drives, bulky ribbon cables and connectors. The monolithic design of the DiskOnChip-Millennium ensures high reliability even when subjected to levels of shock, vibration and temperature changes which would destroy a conventional magnetic disk drive system.

Designed for ease of use and minimal integration overhead, the DiskOnChip-Millennium DIP is shipped as a plug-and-play device, meaning that it is programmed and formatted during production. Future software upgrades and formatting can be done on the target platform. There is no need to remove the DiskOnChip-Millennium from its socket in order to modify its contents or to reformat it.

Applications

  • Embedded Systems
  • Internet Access Devices
  • Set-Top Box or WebTV, Web-Browser
  • WBT, Thin Client, Network Computer
  • Routers, Networking
  • Web-Phones, Car-PC, DVD, HPC
  • Point Of Sale, Industrial PC's
  • Telecom, Medical

TrueFFS® Technology

For emulating a hard disk interface, Flash Disk requires software management layer. M-Systems developed TrueFFS, the patented Flash File System management technology that allows flash components to fully emulate a hard disk. Just read and write like any other hard disks. TrueFFS Software simplifies and enhance Flash memories by:
  • Using Third generation wear leveling - wear leveling ensures that all blocks are erased an equal number of times, which increases the life of the product by orders of magnitude.
  • Using virtual blocking of the flash device to make the large erase blocks transparent to the operator.
  • Automatically mapping bad blocks
  • Implementing a robust power-loss recovery mechanism to guarantee absolute protection of data.

High Reliability

The DiskOnChip-Millennium can be plugged into a standard 32 pin DIP socket or soldered directly onto the motherboard, eliminating the need for mechanical disk drives, bulky ribbon cables and connectors. The monolithic design of the DiskOnChip-Millennium ensures high reliability even when subjected to levels of shock, vibration and temperature changes which would destroy a conventional magnetic disk drive.
